Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Social Enterprise – the business of opportunity and empowerment

22nd February 2010

CALENDAR 26On Friday 26th March Social Enterprise North West in Partnership with The Social Enterprise Coalition will be hosting a half  day event designed to inform the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community about the business opportunities available to them through social enterprise.

Social enterprises are dynamic and sustainable businesses, driven by a social or environmental purpose. According to the most recent government survey, there are at least 62,000 Social Enterprises Nationally, contributing £24 Billion to the economy and they employ 800,000 people.

As the movement continues to grow, the Coalition and all its Regional partners are committed to developing and supporting social enterprise activity. Building community cohesion is at the heart of the social enterprise agenda, therefore the need to empower BAME groups has been identified as a priority.

This event will focus and examine the specific issues around BAME-led community organisations: highlighting various social enterprise business models; showcasing the people behind them and providing everyone attending with an opportunity to feedback, discuss and network.

This conference aims to:

  • Bring BAME individuals, groups and organisations together, which are either considering setting up a social enterprise, or are an existing social enterprise.
  • Provide a platform for BAME social enterprises to learn from each other; to develop partnerships; and to work together.
  • Explore further ways of dealing with any existing barriers to the development of BAME social enterprise growth.
  • Provide a platform to find out and learn more about the different forms of social enterprise.

Who should attend?

  • Aspiring BAME entrepreneurs
  • Social enterprises that work with BAME communities
  • BAME community organisations
  • BAME infrastructure organisations
  • Third Sector representatives
